More than 250 participants attended the Vendor Development Meet organized by Northern Railway at CII



“Digitization is the new face of Indian Railway’s Procurement System”, said Mr T P Singh, General Manager, Northern Railway while addressing the inaugural session of the Vendors’ Development Meet at Chandigarh organized by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Northern Railway in association with Rail Coach Factory (RCF), Kapurthala and Diesel Modernisation Workshop (DMW), Patiala, at CII Northern Region Headquarters, today. The vendor development meet was organised with an objective to provide an opportunity for New and Existing Vendors, to familiarize with the Railway Procurement Process for the New Vendors, inform them about digitisation of Railway Supply Chain – Transparency, Efficiency and the Ease of Doing Business in Railways.

Mr Singh also informed the participants about the innovative system of letter of credit to ease working capital for vendors and availability of up to 90 per cent advance payment. He encouraged both the existing and prospective vendors to partner with the Railways and offered his full support in order to make Indian locomotive system one of the best in the world. He added that the entire process has been computerized, starting from vendor registration to bill payments.

Mr A K Pandey, Principal Executive Director, Railway Board was also present during this meet and said that the Railways procure around INR 1 lakh crores of materials every year and the same is not possible without quality vendors on board. The focus of organizing the Vendors Meet at different locations is not only to familiarize the vendors with the technicalities of procurement, but also to reach out to them at their home towns rather than asking them to travel to various Railway offices.

The concerns of the vendors for timely payments was also addressed and the online digital platform for railway procurement was explained in detail. The Railways emphasized on efficient supply chain together with quality services delivered in time that plays a vital role in its functioning.

The deliberations further highlighted that it is a challenging task to maintain a meticulous supply chain to procure over 10,000 different types of items required for the smooth functioning of railways.

Mr Sarvjeet Singh Virk, Chairman, CII Chandigarh expressed his views and said that, “Credit and Convenience are crucial 2Cs of vendor development”. He also appreciated the fact that Indian Railways are empowering women to step into the manufacturing sector by structured policy interventions.

After the inaugural session, a technical session also took place that introduced various parameters of vendor development, supply chain through digitization and vendor approval by RDSO. An exhibition showcasing Railway Components of Critical Nature by Northern Railways, Rail Coach Factory and Diesel Modernisation Workshop also formed a major highlight of the Vendor Development Meet held at Chandigarh today. The meet was joined by more than 250 delegates from Chandigarh and neighboring industrial areas representing Railways, Industry bodies and various associations.
