Five movies to watch during isolation

The world is currently in the grip of the COVID-19 pandemic, with social distancing being the new buzzword all over. Most countries have put strict lockdown measures in place, with India’s complete shutdown being one of the strictest. The country went into lockdown on 25th March, initially only for three weeks; however, this was extended till 3rd May by the government on account of the rising number of cases in the country. There is no telling as to whether this will be extended even further, especially with the major cities of Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore all being designated as hotspots. During this extended period of isolation, movies are one of the best ways to pass the time, and so these are the top five Bollywood movies to watch during the lockdown –

  • Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)

Probably one of the most famous Bollywood movies of all time, this has become a classic, perfect for anyone needing an introduction to one of the biggest film industries in the world. It stars Shah Rukh Khan, one of Bollywood’s biggest-ever stars, and Kajol, in a classic love story set in the backdrop of a trip across Europe

  • Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011)

This is an extremely well-made movie, about three best friends who decide to embark on a road trip across Spain to honour a pact made years ago, before one of them ties the knot. The music and camerawork will take your breath away, while the cast is star-studded, with Hrithik Roshan, Katrina Kaif and Farhan Akhtar playing starring roles. Interestingly, the movie is directed by Farhan’s sister Zoya Akhtar, while Farhan himself is also a film director of some repute.

  • Teen Patti (2010)

This 2010 English-language film is a rarity for Indian movies – firstly, because it is in English, and secondly, because it is based on gambling. Movies on gambling, be it card games or roulette games, are rare in Indian cinema, and what’s more, this is a star-studded affair, with the legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan being accompanied by Sir Ben Kingsley in leading the cast. It is loosely based on the Hollywood movie 21, with Bachchan playing a mathematics professor who is trying to write a thesis on probability and use it to win big at the Indian card game teen patti.

  • Jodhaa Akbar (2008)

This is truly the larger-than-life experience that Bollywood is all about. Jodhaa Akbar is a historical drama, depicting the story of Akbar, one of the Mughal emperors of India in the 16th century, and his relationship with his wife Jodha. It is truly an epic, clocking in at over three hours of runtime, and features Hrithik Roshan as Akbar and the stunning Aishwarya Rai, a former Miss World winner, as Jodha.

  • Barfi! (2012)

Barfi!, directed by Anurag Basu, is probably one of the best Hindi movies of the last decade. It tells the story of a deaf and mute boy Murphy ‘Barfi’ Johnson, and his relationships through his life with two women, one of whom is autistic. Ranbir Kapoor delivers one of his best performances as Barfi, while Priyanka Chopra is stunning as the autistic girl as well. The movie uses music extensively to portray scenes and emotions, become almost a quasi-musical at times, and is definitely a must-watch to see the changing landscape of Indian cinema.
