Media influences school students more than anyone else. Thanks to media, they feel compelled to buy new toys, gadgets, clothes, accessories, eatables like chocolate and fast food! They think the make- belief world of TV and films is real, and try to copy actors, models and sportsperson. They often waste a lot of time watching TV or surfing the Internet and playing games.
School children must be educated about how they ought to use media to their benefit and how to avoid being negatively affected by it. They must also be taught to balance the tv and Internet time with their study and play time.
Schools can easily provide media education by introducing elements of it in every subject, especially languages and social science. They can also create an annual media education week where lectures by experts , exhibitions, speech making events and poster making activities can be held to bring about greater awareness about media .
Schools children must learn to manage media instead of allowing it to manage them.
