The music lovers of city beautiful were treated to a sparkling Sitar recital by Josh Feinberg  in a special Programme organized by Pracheen Kala Kendra here today. M.L. Koser Indoor Auditorium of Kendra  reverberated in an ebb and flow between the melodious strains from the masterful performance and the applause of the audience. Josh  kept the audience spellbound by the sheer and clean beauty of his skillful fingers racing the length of the Sitar.

Raised in a musical family, Josh Feinberg was introduced to music through classical piano at four years old and later, the bass at eight. As Josh entered adolescence he became increasingly dedicated to music and improvisation. Josh received his initial training on sitar from Vijaya Sundaram. Josh studied sitar with Dr. Peter Row and Dr. George Ruckert, and khyal and raga theory with Sri Warren Senders. In 2005, Josh initiated his training with Ust. Ali Akbar Khan and  also received training from the Ali Akbar Khan-sahib’s senior disciples and sons including Ust. Aashish Khan, Pt. Tejendra Majumdar, Pt. Swapan Chaudhuri and Pt. Anindo Chatterjee during his Seattle workshops.

Josh  began recital with the quiet dignity of the methodical and reposeful alap in Raga “Jaijaiwanti”. This was followed by jod-alap and jod-jhala which were a variant of the usual Sitar playing.  His touch, strokes, glides and subsequent production of tonal and microtonal effects points to his sound training. He then moved on to present  gats in Rupak tall and drut (fast) composition were set to the time cycle of 16 beats (teen taal). Josh concluded his recital with a Dhun amid thunderous applause.  Josh’s sensitive yet controlled handling of the instrument was testimony to his talent and dedication to music. The rhythm on the Tabla was marked by Rupak Bhattacharyya, an eminent Tabla player from Kolkata .
