Zimbabwe woman gets a new lease of life at Ojas Hospital

A 29-yr old woman from Zimbabwe has got a new lease of life at Ojas Hospital, Panchkula. The woman was suffering from valvular heart disease with  severely leaking mitral valve on left side, decreased heart function and dilated heart as well .

Giving information , Dr Virendar Sarwal, Director and Head of Department of CTVS said that the surgery involved high risk due to patient’s weak heart muscles. Add to that, she was an immuno compromised patient as she was a PLHA survivor and on anti-viral drug, Dr Sarwal said.

Dr Sarwal evaluated her condition in detail and prepared her well pre-operatively for a mitral valve replacement with mechanical valve under cardiopulmonary bypass. Her detailed echo test was done by Dr Anurag Sharma to see exactly the heart dimensions and morphology of the valve.

As these kind of patients are treated with a team work, the team at Ojas including Dr. Parveen Nayak, Dr Jatinder, Dr Khan along with Dr Sarwal prepared the patient over a period besides training other staff and creating an optimal operative ICU care with due standard  precautions for an uneventful recovery.

She was taken up for surgery on February 11 and her mitral valve was replaced with 27 St Jude mechanical valve with due precautions in operation theatre. She tolerated surgery uneventfully.

Her postoperative period in isolation because of her PLHA status was smooth and she recovered well after surgery. She was discharged on 8th post-operative day from the hospital for her onward journey to Zimbabwe.

Treating these patients require a coordinated effort from team and many extra efforts are done plus due precautions are required to operate upon such patients successfully, maintained Dr Sarwal.
