On the occasion of World Kidney Day, MASSH PROLIFE Hospital has once again raised awareness about the dangers associated with kidney stones. Kidney-related diseases are on the rise in India. Our country has already been declared the ‘Diabetes Capital,’ and along with it, cases of kidney stones are increasing. Northern India, particularly Punjab, is considered a ‘Stone Belt,’ where low water intake, unhealthy diet, and obesity are leading to a surge in kidney stone patients. Experts warn that diabetic patients should seek timely treatment for kidney stones, as any delay can significantly increase the risk of kidney infections and other serious complications.
On this occasion, Dr. Varun Mittal, Senior Consultant – Advanced Urology at MASSH PROLIFE Hospital, Ludhiana, highlighted that increasing consumption of junk food, inadequate water intake, and excessive salt and protein in the diet are the primary causes behind growing cases of kidney stones in Ludhiana and surrounding areas. Dehydration not only raises the risk of kidney stones but can also cause permanent kidney damage.
Dr. Mittal further emphasized that kidney stone cases are rising among children as well, which is a serious concern. Poor eating habits and insufficient water intake are contributing factors to this problem in children.
According to Dr. Mittal, “Excess salt consumption, especially via junk food increases the risk of kidney stones and high blood pressure (hypertension). Salt causes the body to excrete extra calcium through urine, increasing the chances of kidney stone formation. Similarly, a high-protein diet, especially without medical supervision, can also harm kidney health.”
Factors such as increasing pollution, uncontrolled use of painkillers, and excessive intake of health supplements without medical advice can cause severe damage to the kidneys. Dr. Mittal pointed out that people today frequently consume over-the-counter (OTC) painkillers without medical consultation, which puts additional stress on the kidneys and negatively affects their function.
For kidney stone treatment, advanced laser surgeries (RIRS) and minimally invasive surgery (Mini-PERC) are now available. These advanced techniques ensure minimal pain and require only a short hospital stay.
Doctor also emphasized that diabetic patients face a higher risk of infections due to kidney stones. If a stone remains in the kidney for a long time, it can lead to urinary tract infections (UTI) and even kidney failure. Therefore, diabetic patients should seek timely treatment for kidney stones.
Warning Signs That Require Immediate Medical Attention:
– Swelling in the legs and face
– High blood pressure
– Presence of protein in urine
– Decreased urine output
– Frequent infections
How to Keep Your Kidneys Healthy?
– Drink plenty of water (at least 8-10 glasses daily)
– Avoid excessive salt and processed foods
– Consult a dietician before following a high-protein diet
– Limit the use of painkillers and health supplements without prescription
– Exercise regularly and maintain a healthy weight
– Avoid smoking and alcohol
Dr. Varun Mittal stressed that adopting the right habits in time can not only prevent kidney stones but also ensure long-term kidney health. Diabetes and high blood pressure patients, in particular, should not take kidney stone issues lightly and should seek timely medical advice for proper treatment.
