
Defending champions Minerva Academy Football Club booked their place in the final of the AIFF Sub-Junior League 2025–26 after defeating Bengaluru FC in a dramatic semi-final clash at the Madras FC Ground.
After an intense battle ended 1-1 in regulation time, Minerva held their composure in the penalty shootout to secure a 5-3 victory and keep their hopes of defending the national title alive.
The semi-final kicked off at 4:30 PM, Minerva again deployed their attacking 4-3-3 formation, while Bengaluru FC opted for a compact 4-5-1 setup focused on defensive organisation and counterattacks.
From the opening whistle, Minerva dominated possession and pressed aggressively high up the pitch. Bengaluru, meanwhile, remained disciplined at the back and looked dangerous whenever they broke forward on the counter.
The match quickly developed into a tactical contest. Minerva moved the ball sharply through midfield and continuously searched for openings with quick passing combinations and overlapping runs. Bengaluru FC, however, defended resolutely, frustrating Minerva’s attackers and denying space inside the penalty area.
Despite several promising attacks from both sides, the first half ended goalless.
The intensity increased further after the restart as Minerva began controlling larger phases of the game. Their pressing forced repeated turnovers, while Bengaluru continued to defend with determination, throwing bodies in front of shots and resisting wave after wave of attacks.

Minerva finally found the breakthrough in the 87th minute after introducing T. Kipgen from the bench. Following sustained pressure inside the penalty area, the winger reacted quickest to a loose ball and calmly slotted home to give Minerva a crucial 1-0 lead.
The goal sparked celebrations around the ground and briefly appeared to have sealed Minerva’s place in the final. But Bengaluru FC produced one final response. Deep into stoppage time, at 90+5 minutes, Bengaluru launched a swift counterattack and capitalised on Minerva being pushed high up the field. The move ended with a dramatic equaliser that silenced the celebrations and pushed the semi-final into penalties.
The match then became a test of composure and mental strength. Under enormous pressure, Minerva’s penalty takers converted confidently, while the team maintained its discipline throughout the shootout. Minerva eventually sealed a 5-3 victory on penalties, triggering emotional celebrations among players, coaches, and supporters. The result not only highlighted Minerva’s attacking quality but also showcased the resilience and mentality of a champion side. Against a disciplined Bengaluru FC outfit, Minerva remained patient, continued to believe in their approach, and ultimately found a way to prevail.
Now, the defending champions stand just one victory away from retaining the national crown as they march into the AIFF Sub-Junior League final with confidence and momentum.
