Haryana’s Energy, Transport and Labour Minister Sh. Anil Vij said that today’s new generation has become immersed in mobile phones, TV and computers. In order to be more alert and live healthier lives, young people must reduce their screen time on mobile and television.
Vij made these remarks last evening at the “Bhavishya Jyoti Samaroh” program organized to honor meritorious students of Ambala district, where he was the chief guest. During the program, he honored 125 top-performing students from various schools in the district and announced Rs. 10,000 for each student (total Rs.12.50 lakh) from his discretionary fund.
*We need people and a society that can shape character and guide with wisdom – Vij*
Vij said that today, people spend a significant amount of time watching the world through television, and our actions and reactions are influenced by what we see. Every invention has its pros and cons. While mobile phones have increased awareness in society, they have also had negative consequences. He reminisced that earlier, people would sit together and chat in their neighborhoods, fostering connections, but now people hardly gather like that. He emphasized the need for individuals and communities that can build character, provide direction and spread knowledge—enabling people to live fulfilling lives and help others do the same.
*We must benefit from technology but also protect ourselves from its side effects – Vij*
He urged people to minimize mobile and social media usage because excessive use of mobile phones harms our health—a fact often realized only after visiting the doctor. While technology should be embraced, its ill effects must be avoided. Sh.Vij noted that earlier, knowledge sources were limited—people learned only what was taught in schools. Every good action begins with lighting a lamp, symbolizing the phrase “Tamaso Ma Jyotirgamaya,” meaning “from darkness to light.” He recalled that during his youth time, there were no mobile phones, TVs, tablets or internet. They studied from school books and spent hours in the state library to understand concepts. However, knowledge is boundless and should not be confined to books. The desire to learn should always remain alive, he added.
*Every person has some unique quality or talent – Vij*
He said every individual has at least one special quality or talent. “Success is a combination of two things: ability and opportunity. If someone is highly capable but never gets an opportunity, their talent can go to waste.” He added that he has always appreciated those who contribute to social and character development and is thankful to them. On this occasion, Sh. Vij said to the students that competition builds self-confidence. Not everyone can come on stage to sing or speak, but some people have the confidence to do so. The program was attended by prominent citizens, hundreds of students and their parents.
