Although I don’t advocate gender discrimination but the fact remains that girls are more prone to the criminal mindsets. They are surely sensitive and delicate to handle the hard character of these criminals. Opening girls hostel 24 X 7 will surely help the number of students preparing for competitive exams but the fact remains who shall be accountable if a mis happening takes place.
We know that girls staying in hostel belong from places other than Chandigarh and parents leave them to build their careers in a better environment. If their child does any activity without their consent, then who shall be held responsible.
Yes these students are adults and they can take their own decisions but keeping them secure is also the prerogative of the Chandigarh Police. Looking at increasing crime rate in the city, it would be quite difficult to ensure that all the girls are safe both inside and outside the hostel.
They will become an easy prey for the predator and more so the girls might do themselves wrong under influence. It becomes really important that a check may be drawn on the easy access to beer bars, discotheques and other so called place of enjoyment for youngsters. Apart from studies, travel etc. there is essentially no need to move out of the hostel at night hours.
May be girls want independence to enjoy their freedom far from their homes. A dedicated mobile app may be developed for the PU girls where a special team of police can be kept at back-end to immediately help the girl in need. It should be made mandatory for the radio taxis running during night hours to report the complete details about the driver, car number and install GPS system synced with registration number so that it can be intercepted in case of any exigency.
Also instructions should be issued that any girl found in bad state of mind or under influence of alcohol or carrying any objectionable material shall not be permitted inside the hostel along with levy of heavy fines and penalties. As it is not only the security outside the hostel which is important, but also the conducive environment within the hostel. We cannot let a rotten apple to spoil others.
With this I congratulate the students who have won their struggle for freedom and hope they shall cherish the same with a sense of responsibility, proving all of us wrong.
