Sahayta Charitable Welfare Society organises Breast Cancer Awareness Walkathon
Hundreds of people from different walks of life including breast cancer survivors and senior doctors of PGIMER and GMCH-32  took part in a Breast Cancer Awareness Walkathon organized by Sahayta Charitable Welfare Society at Sukhna Lake. The walkathon was held as  part of ‘Pink October’ which is being celebrated as ‘Breast and Cervix Cancer Awareness Month’ (BCCAM).
 
The Breast Cancer Awareness Walkathon was flagged off by Dr Pankaj Malhotra, Professor and Head, Department of Clinical Hematology and Medical Oncology, PGIMER, Chandigarh.
 
“The walkathon was held under the aegis of Sahayta Charitable Welfare Society. The response was amazing. It is our collective duty to create more and more awareness about breast and cervix cancer,” said Renu Saigal, President, Sahayta Charitable Welfare Society.

Ajay Tulli, Administrator, Sahayta Charitable Welfare Society, said that the theme for this year’s Breast and Cervix Cancer Awareness Month as announced by the National Cancer Information System (NCIS) was ‘Keeping Her in The Picture’. A ‘Nukkad Natak’ was also staged by the students of St Soldier Divine Public School, Sector 16, Panchkula on this theme, he added.
 
 At the event women were also made aware about the importance of early detection of the disease and treatment protocols to be followed. Dr Pankaj and Dr Bhavna from PGIMER answered the queries of the public.

Apart from breast cancer survivors and senior doctors, students from various schools and NSS students from various colleges took part in the walkathon . NCC cadets from Army, Air Force and Navy Wings, Army Generals, Veterans and Army wives also participated.
 
Members of NGOs like Rotary Club, Inner Wheel Club, Chandigarh Senior Citizens Association and Sanjeevani too walked for cancer awareness. Volunteers of Karuna Sparsh also took part in the Chandigarh City Pink Walk along-with members of SBI Ladies Club. The walkathon saw participation of advocates from the High Court, architects and aware citizens of the tricity.
