Sidhu: Will attend office after officers replaced

Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu on Friday announced the withdrawal of his resignation from the party post even as he mounted pressure on the Channi led-government by reiterating his demand for the replacement of Advocate General APS Deol and DGP Iqbal Preet Singh Sahota.

Addressing a press conference, he said he would resume work after the new appointments were made. Sidhu had resigned on September 28. Questioning his own government, Sidhu said he had been raising these issues with CM Charanjit Singh Channi, but nothing happened in the last 50 days. “The blue-eyed officer of the Akalis who protected culprits of sacrilege has been made the DGP. Also, our government reposed faith in the person who represented ex-DGP Sumedh Singh Saini,” said Sidhu.

On his reported differences with Channi, the PCC chief said there was no difference of opinion between them. He said, “Either we make tall promises and form the government or we work on an agenda to restore the Punjab’s glory.”

Sources said the withdrawal of resignation by Sidhu was well-timed as the decision on the two posts was on the cards. The resignation sought from the AG was likely to be tabled in tomorrow’s Cabinet meeting. Regarding the DGP’s post, the state was waiting for the UPSC to return the panel of shortlisted officers, they said.

A senior leader said, “It is a credit war. Sidhu wants to be in the centre stage of the decision-making process, while CM Channi wants the government to take the credit.”
