Renowned Hindustani classical vocalist Bhuvanesh Komkali captivated audiences with a powerful and deeply expressive performance at ‘Varsha Ritu Sangeet Sandhya 2026’, organised by Indian National Theatre in collaboration with the Durga Das Foundation.
The musical evening took place in the auditorium of Strawberry Fields High School, Sector 26, celebrating the arrival of the monsoon through the rich tradition of Hindustani classical music.
The event was organized not only to celebrate the arrival of the monsoon but also to pay tribute to the late Navjeevan Khosla, patron of the Indian National Theatre, a befitting homage through music that speaks directly to the soul, said Anil Nehru, President of the Indian National Theatre, and Vinita Gupta, Honorary Secretary.
Renowned classical vocalist Bhuvanesh Komkali commenced his captivating performance with “Karim naam tero,” a traditional khayal in vilambit Ek Taal in Raag Miyan Malhar.
He followed with a lively drut bandish, “Saavan jhariyo,” composed by his grandfather, Pt. Kumar Gandharva, in the same raag. Then, in continuation with the monsoon theme, came “Jhuki aai badariya saavan ki,” a traditional bandish in madhya laya Teen Taal, in Raag Gaud Malhar.”
Taking the musical narrative forward, he presented a soul-stirring thumri in Raag Pilu Khamaj, ‘Main kaise aaun balma,’ followed by ‘Megha ko ritu aayo re’ in Raag Jaladhar Kedar, both of which beautifully captured the essence of the season and enveloped the audience in a wave of emotion.”
The audience was then treated to Bhuvaneshji’s rhythmic dexterity and range as he performed “Dal re baadal beech,” a folk song, before following up with a melodious folk bhajan titled “Ritu aayi bole mora re”, blending classical elegance with folk charm.
He concluded the recital with a contemplative Raag Nirguni Bhairavi, presenting a stirring Kabir bhajan, “Gagan ghata gahraai”. The mystical depth and spiritual undertone of this final piece left the audience spellbound, drawing the performance to a serene and profound close.
Bhuvanesh Komkali is a gifted Hindustani classical artist. He has inherited the musical legacy of his grandfather, the legendary Pandit Kumar Gandharva, and his father, Mukul Shivputra. He received his initial training from Smt. Vasundhara Komkali and eminent musician Shri Madhup Mudgal, and continues to refine his art under their guidance.
Through dedicated practice, self-study and rigorous training, Bhuvanesh Komkali is carrying forward Pandit Gandharva’s rich legacy. Inspired by the musical philosophy and musical values he inherited, Bhuvanesh beautifully blends the essence of various gharanas, folk traditions and contemporary musical elements, creating a unique and enriching experience for audiences.
Accompanying him were Chetan Nigam on harmonium and tabla nawaz Shambhunath Bhattacharjee, both of whom complemented his performance with finesse and sensitivity. The compère for the evening was Atul Dubey.
Entry to the event was free, allowing music lovers to experience the much- sought-after magic of classical Hindustani music and its alignment with the rhythm of nature.
