Chandigarh, The UT Cricket Association (UTCA), in collaboration with Chandigarh Police has announced the indefinite postponement of the ongoing Gully Cricket Tournament due to the escalating Indo-Pak war. The tournament which had been running smoothly for the past several weeks was set to conclude with the grand final on May 11, 2025 However, two quarterfinals, two semifinals, and the final match are still pending.
While addressing a press conference, UTCA President Sanjay Tandon said the decision to halt the tournament was made in the larger interest of the nation. “This is a time when national priorities take precedence, and we stand united with the country,” he stated.
The 22-day-long event witnessed enthusiastic participation, with 512 boys’ teams and 64 girls’ teams competing in 507 and 58 matches respectively across 16 venues. The tournament saw an impressive display of cricketing talent, amassing over 69,000 runs, including seven centuries and 123 half-centuries.
Tandon also revealed that selectors have shortlisted 72 boys and 10 girls for advanced training based on their performance in the tournament. Furthermore, seven exhibition matches involving intellectuals and dignitaries were successfully conducted during the event.
In response to the national crisis, UTCA will now focus its efforts on organizing a blood donation camp on May 12 (Monday) at the cricket stadium to support wartime needs. “We believe this is the least we can do to contribute to the country in this challenging time,” Tandon added.
