The historic and grand theatrical production of “Sher-e-Punjab – Punjab Kesari Lala Lajpat Rai” was staged with great magnificence, emotional depth, and patriotic fervour at Tagore Theatre on May 16, 2026. The presentation was organised by Centre for Socio Cultural Study in collaboration with Samvad Theatre Group.
More than just a theatrical performance, the production served as a powerful and vivid portrayal of India’s freedom struggle and the revolutionary spirit that shook the foundations of British rule in India.
The Chief Guest for the occasion was Gulab Chand Kataria, who graced the event with his presence.
The play was inspired and produced under the guidance of Satinder Singh, Advocate and Secretary of the Centre for Socio Cultural Study, along with Rajeev Gupta and Gaurav Kansal, whose special presence added significance to the event.
Distinguished guests included Sukhi Brar, P. C. Dogra, and Colonel Jaibans Singh.
The play beautifully depicted the life, struggles, sacrifices, ideals, and indomitable courage of the legendary freedom fighter, social reformer, and nationalist leader Lala Lajpat Rai. The powerful presentation transported the audience to an era when patriotism was not merely an emotion, but a commitment to sacrifice everything for the nation.
From Lala Ji’s childhood to his rise as one of the foremost leaders of India’s independence movement, the play portrayed his fearless resistance against British oppression and his efforts to ignite the spirit of revolution and nationalism among the youth.
The production also highlighted his dedication towards education, his association with the Arya Samaj, his contribution to social reform, women’s education, youth empowerment, and his efforts to promote self-reliance in India. His role in the establishment of national institutions such as Punjab National Bank and Lakshmi Insurance Company was also effectively showcased, emphasizing the ideals of Swadeshi and self-reliant India.
Some of the most impactful scenes included the anti-partition movement of Bengal, protests against British atrocities, the agitation against the Rowlatt Act, the horrors of the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre, ideological interactions with revolutionaries, and the historic protest rally against the Simon Commission Protest in Lahore.
The Simon Commission protest scene emerged as one of the most emotional and electrifying moments of the evening. Even while injured during the brutal lathi charge, Lala Ji’s thunderous declaration —
“Every blow on my body will become the final nail in the coffin of British rule!”
— echoed across the auditorium and was met with prolonged applause and patriotic slogans.
Several powerful dialogues in the play stirred deep patriotic emotions among the audience:
“A nation that does not honour its heroes walks towards darkness.”
“Slavery is not only of the body; slavery of thought is the greatest curse.”
“The awakening of youth is the greatest strength of freedom.”
“When injustice becomes law, opposing it becomes a national duty.”
The play also portrayed Lala Lajpat Rai not only as a revolutionary leader, but also as a visionary writer, thinker, and social reformer who inspired generations through his speeches, writings, and movements promoting self-respect, Swadeshi, and freedom.
The final scenes, depicting his unwavering courage and sacrifice despite severe injuries from the lathi charge, left the audience deeply emotional. The auditorium resonated for a long time with thunderous applause and chants of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai.”
This historic presentation proved to be a meaningful effort to introduce the younger generation to the life, ideology, and sacrifices of one of India’s greatest freedom fighters and to rekindle the spirit of patriotism and national pride.
