Paras Health Pkl Successfully Treats Chronic Diabetic Foot Ulcers, Reducing Risk of Amputation

Paras Health Panchkula has successfully treated four patients suffering from chronic diabetic foot ulcers using an advanced pressure-relief surgical procedure, significantly reducing their risk of amputation and improving their mobility and quality of life.

Diabetic foot ulcers are among the leading causes of lower-limb amputations in people living with diabetes. The four patients treated at Paras Health Panchkula had been struggling with persistent or recurring ulcers beneath the big toe despite undergoing prolonged conventional treatment. Following the advanced intervention, all patients achieved complete wound healing, and none experienced a recurrence during the follow-up period.

In addition to wound closure, the patients reported greater comfort while walking and improved mobility, highlighting the effectiveness of the procedure in addressing one of the most challenging complications of diabetes.

The achievement comes at a time when diabetic foot complications are emerging as a major public health concern in India. Diabetic foot ulcers frequently result in recurrent infections, prolonged treatment, reduced mobility, and, in severe cases, limb amputations. Ulcers located beneath the big toe are particularly difficult to heal because the area is subjected to continuous pressure during walking. Although wound dressings, antibiotics, diabetic footwear, and offloading measures remain the standard treatment, ulcers often recur when the underlying pressure points are not adequately corrected.

Commenting on the development, Dr. Sourav Sarkar, Consultant – Plastic Surgery, Paras Health Panchkula, said, “Diabetic foot ulcers are not just wounds; they are a significant risk factor for infection, hospitalization, and amputation. Studies indicate that nearly 15% of people with diabetes develop a diabetic foot ulcer during their lifetime, and approximately 20–30% of these patients may eventually require an amputation. Early diagnosis, timely intervention, and a multidisciplinary treatment approach are crucial in preserving limbs, restoring mobility, and improving patient outcomes.”

Dr. Pankaj Mittal, Facility Director, Paras Health Panchkula, said, “Diabetic foot complications continue to be one of the leading causes of non-traumatic amputations worldwide. At Paras Health Panchkula, we are committed to providing comprehensive diabetic foot care through timely diagnosis, advanced surgical expertise, and personalized rehabilitation. These successful outcomes demonstrate how specialized treatment and early intervention can help prevent amputations and enable patients to regain independence and a better quality of life.”

The procedure used in these cases, Keller’s Gap Arthroplasty, is an advanced surgical technique designed to relieve excessive pressure beneath the big toe, a common site for recurrent diabetic foot ulcers. By addressing the root cause of the wound and redistributing pressure away from the affected area, the procedure promotes healing and significantly reduces the chances of recurrence.

Experts believe that timely intervention and specialized diabetic foot care can play a vital role in preventing complications, preserving mobility, and helping patients avoid limb loss, ultimately improving long-term health outcomes for people living with diabetes.
