CME on ‘Cardiovascular Axis’ held at Anandpur Sahib Anandpur Sahib, April 15: As many as 40 doctors from Anandpur Sahib, Nurpur Bedi, and Nangal attended an Ivy Hospital’s CME on Cardiovascular Axis at Hotel New Park Plaza here. Addressing CME, Dr Ankur Ahuja, Director Cardiology at Ivy Hospital, Mohali said that coronary artery disease (CAD) i.e angina or heart attack is caused by atherosclerosis or deposition of cholesterol in the arteries of the heart. However it is frequently associated with atherosclerosis in other vessels of the body i.e. peripheral arteries. He said further that peripheral artery disease (PAD) is not an uncommon problem . It is the reason for stroke (carotid artery disease), limb claudication or pain in legs on exertion, renovascular hypertension (renal artery disease leading to hypertension or kidney dysfunction) or mesenteric ischemia (disease in arteries supplying intestine) . “Occasionally PAD results in dilation of arteries (aneurysm ) which can rupture and result in bleeding within the body. Since atherosclerosis is the usually underline cause of coronary and peripheral artery disease, the treatment of both these condition overlaps to a large extent. Antiplatelet agents and statins are useful in both conditions.” Anticoagulants and thrombolytic agents are often used . There are medicines to reduce symptoms in both situations. In severely symptomatic patient, just like CAD , angioplasty /stenting and surgical procedures are useful said Dr Ahuja adding infact, in critical situations , these procedures can save the limb and life of the patient. Surgical procedures have been the gold standard . However with ever improving results and being less -traumatic endovascular interventions are now more frequently used for such patients. The use of these strategies can provide relief to most of these patients, asserted Dr Ahuja. PAD is an often underdiagnosed problem , which can be easily managed and leads to a good quality of life for most of the patients, he remarked.
