Haryana’s Energy, Transport and Labour Minister Sh. Anil Vij said that “Punjab should honour the Supreme Court’s decision by constructing the canal and ensuring water supply so that people’s thirst is quenched and the dried-up fields can also get irrigation.” Sh. Vij was responding to a question asked by the media persons today regarding the ongoing issue and meetings between Punjab and Haryana over the SYL (Sutlej-Yamuna Link) canal. He said that “Earlier, Haryana and Punjab were one state, and everything was shared between us. But after Haryana became a separate state, our rights also became clear. We have equal rights over the water. The Hon’ble Supreme Court has already ruled in favour of Haryana, yet Punjab keeps taking such steps that damage relations and deny Haryana its fair share of water.” Meanwhile, he said that“water is flowing into Pakistan — something Punjab seems to accept — but the Punjab government is not making any effort to stop this wastage.” He further said that “The Central Government has spoken about revoking the Indus Waters Treaty, because the agreement made by the then government was wrong — giving away 80% of water to Pakistan and ignoring our own dry fields. Then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru himself went to Pakistan to sign that treaty. But the Sindhu River is ours, and it’s from drinking the water of Sindhu that we became Hindus.” He said that “The Centre is working to block that water, but Punjab is doing nothing to stop the flow of water into Pakistan,” he said. “Even the land acquired for the canal has been denotified by Punjab, and the agreement was cancelled by calling a session of their Vidhan Sabha, he said.” Sh. Vij questioned that“Punjab’s culture is to install water stalls (chhabeels), to serve water to the thirsty — how can Punjab forget that very culture?” _____
